Professor Tony Kendrick is Professor of Primary Care within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton. With over 250 publications including more than 160 peer-reviewed articles, six books, and 32 book chapters, he has established himself as a leading expert in primary care mental health. His research has significantly influenced clinical practice through contributions to NICE guidelines on depression and performance indicators in the UK GP contract quality framework.
Professor Kendrick's research interests focus on mental health problems in primary care settings, particularly depression management and antidepressant discontinuation. His groundbreaking REDUCE trial tested internet and telephone support for people coming off long-term antidepressants, which proved effective in improving patients' quality of life at low cost. His work has addressed the management of common mental health problems in primary care over 30 years, influencing changes in the management of schizophrenia and depression in primary care settings.
His extensive media presence includes interviews on ITV's This Morning, BBC Radio 4's PM, and the Panorama programme 'The Antidepressant Story,' as well as coverage in major publications like The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Times. His research has received widespread attention, particularly regarding the challenges of antidepressant withdrawal and long-term use.
