Tony Joel is an Associate Professor of History at Deakin University's Faculty of Arts and Education, School of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy and Bachelor of Arts from Deakin University. His research spans historical studies, sports science, political science, Holocaust studies, and Australian football history, with current work focusing on the establishment of the VFL/AFL.
Teaching interests include modern German history, Holocaust studies, Cold War, sports history, and historiography. Joel chairs units on the Holocaust and Sport in History.
Publications reflect interdisciplinary trends, blending sports history with social ethics and memory politics, particularly examining Australian sporting scandals and post-war German trauma.
