Dr. Tony Hartshorn serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Land Resources & Environmental Sciences within Montana State University's College of Agriculture, where he maintains an active research and teaching program focused on soil systems.
His educational foundation includes a Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of California, Davis (2003), establishing his expertise in soil-landscape interactions. Research interests span critical areas including soil literacy, carbon cycling, remediation techniques, and sustainable management of both croplands and rangelands.
Dr. Hartshorn leads the Soil Interrogation Lab, which investigates practical solutions for soil health challenges through field studies and laboratory analysis. His service contributions include significant roles as reviewer for USDA NIFA and National Science Foundation, alongside active membership in environmental organizations like the Northern Plains Resource Council and Quivira Coalition.
Professional recognition includes nomination for MSU's Discovery Award (2015). Current funding from the Montana Wheat & Barley Committee supports his research on carbon turnover in dryland wheat systems. He teaches core courses including Soils (ENSC 245IN) and Soil Remediation (ENSC 460), emphasizing hands-on learning and real-world applications.
