Tony Curran is a Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Tasmania’s School of Creative Arts and Media, specializing in post-digital art practices. He holds a PhD in Fine Art (2015, Charles Sturt University) and has exhibited nationally, including solo and group shows in Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne. His research focuses on touchscreen technologies’ impact on painting and evolving self-representation in the digital age.
Education: PhD (Charles Sturt U, 2015), MArt (UNSW), BVA(Hons) (Charles Sturt U), BSc Psychology (Macquarie U).
Research interests include human-machine interaction in art, algorithmic mark-making, and the erosion of ‘inner life’ in digital culture. He has held residencies at the ANU Research School of Computer Science (collaborating with Dr Ben Swift) and the National Portrait Gallery (2013).
Awards include the 2016 ANU Visiting Artist Fellowship and multiple national art prize nominations (Archibald Prize, Brett Whiteley Scholarship). Recent projects explore Tasmania’s digital identity and the role of mobile technology in landscape painting.
