Dr. Tony Bolden is a Professor of African and African-American Studies and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Kansas. His research focuses on artistic expression in the African Diaspora, particularly Black music and literature. He is renowned for pioneering funk studies, organizing symposia like 'Eruptions of Funk' (2007) and 'Make It Funky' (2010–2016), and editing The Funk Issue (2013) for American Studies. His books include Afro-Blue (2004) and Groove Theory (2020), which explore the blues foundation of funk and its cultural philosophy. Bolden also serves as Editor of The Langston Hughes Review and contributes to platforms like Carnegie Hall's Digital Timeline of African American Music.
His work bridges music, literature, and social justice, emphasizing funk as a transformative cultural practice. Recent projects include monographs on Black writing and autobiographical essays. Bolden’s interdisciplinary approach has influenced scholarly and public discourse on Black cultural heritage.
