Tonje Rambøll Johannessen is a Research Fellow at the Department of General Practice, University of Oslo. Her work focuses on improving acute care protocols through cardiac biomarker research, particularly the use of high-sensitivity troponin assays in emergency primary care settings. She leads the OUT-ACS and OUT-POC studies evaluating rapid rule-out algorithms for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Johannessen holds a Cand.med. (MD) from the University of Oslo (2011) and completed her PhD in 2022 with a focus on pre-hospital ACS diagnostics. She concurrently serves as a physician at Oslo's Emergency General Practice clinic.
Her research interests include emergency primary care optimization, clinical guideline implementation, and reducing overdiagnosis through evidence-based protocols. She teaches medical students at the Faculty of Medicine on topics like chest pain management and navigating clinical uncertainty (courses MED 3300, MED 3068, MED 6800).
Johannessen has received multiple awards including the 2019 CHFR Symposium Best Poster Award for her OUT-ACS work and the 2025 Vårmøte Best Paper Award for the OUT-POC pilot study. Her research group collaborates with institutions like Oslo University Hospital and the Norwegian Research Fund for General Practice, focusing on cost-effective diagnostic strategies for low-risk populations.
