Toni Rønnow-Rasmussen is Professor of Practical Philosophy at Lund University, Sweden, serving since 2008 and acting as department chair since 2014. His academic trajectory includes positions as University Lecturer at Lund University (2000-2008), part-time University Lecturer at Växjö University (1999-2004), and research roles funded by The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation (2003-2006) and Swedish Research Council (2010-2012). He was competitively appointed as Fellow at the University of St Andrews (2013).
Rønnow-Rasmussen's research centers on Value Theory and Metaethics, with particular focus on formal and substantive analysis of value, theories of practical reasons (normativity), and R. M. Hare's metaethics. His work explores the relationship between value and reasons for action, personal value, and the buck-passing theory. He has made significant contributions to understanding intrinsic versus instrumental value and the concept of 'for its own sake' value.
His publication record demonstrates a sustained scholarly trajectory in value theory, highlighted by the influential 2011 monograph Personal Value (Oxford University Press) and the highly cited 2004 paper The Strike of the Demon. His research bridges formal philosophical analysis with substantive ethical questions about well-being and normative reasons, establishing him as a leading contemporary figure in value theory.
