Tomáš Holan is an Associate Professor at the Department of Software and Computer Science Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague. With academic activity dating back to at least 1993, he has made significant contributions to natural language processing, programming education, and game development.
His research spans:
- Natural language dependency parsing for free-word-order languages
- Programming education methodologies
- Computer game development frameworks
- Educational software tools
Dr. Holan developed "proGRAM," a sophisticated natural language dependency parser designed specifically for languages like Czech with complex word order. His theoretical work on DR-trees and measures of non-projectivity (dNg, Ng) represents an important contribution to computational linguistics.
He teaches multiple courses including Programming I, Programming II, Algorithmization, and Basics of Computer Game Development, where students work with Unity and develop games through structured projects emphasizing concepts like "juiciness" in game design.
Dr. Holan has supervised numerous bachelor's theses and year-long projects, demonstrating his commitment to student development. His motto, "Počítač je dobrý sluha, ale zlý pán" (The computer is a good servant but a bad master), reflects his philosophical approach to technology education.
