Tomás Lozano-Pérez is the School of Engineering Professor in Teaching Excellence at MIT, affiliated with the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). His research focuses on robotics, computer vision, machine learning, and computational chemistry. He has received prestigious awards including the IEEE Robotics and Automation Award (2021), IEEE Robotics Pioneer Award (2011), and Presidential Young Investigator Award (1985). A Fellow of AAAI, ACM, and IEEE, his work integrates machine learning with task, motion, and decision-theoretic planning for robotic manipulation.
Current projects include Integrated Task and Motion Planning in Belief Space, which addresses dynamic environments requiring coordinated planning of perception and action. He has supervised over 40 doctoral theses, co-developed the Handey robotic task planner, and led Technologically Enhanced Education initiatives to modernize MIT's curricula using interactive online tools. His research also explores perception-action integration for mobile manipulation and has been supported by NSF, ONR, AFOSR, and Singapore-MIT collaborations.
- Awards: IEEE Robotics Awards (2021, 2011), Presidential Young Investigator (1985), AAAI/ACM/IEEE Fellowships
- Key Projects: LIS Group, Belief Space Planning, Handey Robot Planner, PR2 Manipulation Experiments
- Grants: NSF Grant 1117325, ONR MURI, AFOSR, Singapore-MIT International Design Center
His lab's work is featured in LIS Group publications, with over 200 academic articles in robotics and AI venues. Collaborations include Willow Garage's PR2 Beta Program and MIT's EECS department-wide educational reforms.
