Dr. Tomoko Iwata is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow's School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing, specializing in FGFR3 biology, digital pathology, and molecular pathology. With over 20 years of experience, she has pioneered research in tumor biology and biomarker development for cancers, particularly focusing on bladder and colorectal tumors.
- PhD in Biochemistry from ETH-Zurich (1996)
- Postdoctoral Training: NIH, USA; EMBL-Heidelberg and Max-Planck Institute, Germany
Her research integrates advanced technologies like spatial transcriptomics, multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF), and digital pathology to explore tumor immune microenvironments and inflammation-driven cancer progression. She leads the Innovate UK-funded INCISE project, aiming to predict polyp recurrence through integrated technologies.
Dr. Iwata's recent publications highlight her work on FGFR3 mutations, immune suppression in premalignant lesions, and inflammation regulation in tumorigenesis. Her methodologies span mouse models, histone modification studies, and biomarker validation via liquid biopsy.
- Scientific Awards
- Fellow of Higher Education Academy (Advance HE) since 2013
- Professional Leadership
- Director of Postgraduate Research (SoMDN, since 2022)
- Member, Athena Swan Aspiration and Development working group
- Reviewer for UKRI grants and international studentships
She supervises 116 UG/PGT projects since 2014, including Pathological Society Elective Projects, and teaches courses such as Digital Pathology and Image Analysis and Targeting Cell Signaling at the postgraduate level.
