Okamoto's research focuses on two primary areas: 1) the theory of the nation-state, examining how human social actions are involved in the creation, maintenance, and transformation of nation-based world perception in modern society; and 2) the theory of a symbiotic society, analyzing social conflicts surrounding differences in nationalism, ethnicity, gender, the body, generation, class, and hierarchy. His work explores the logic and resources for social coexistence in contemporary society.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on historical consciousness, social cohesion, and the relationship between educational practices and societal integration. Okamoto has been investigating how historical education shapes perceptions of coexistence and national identity, with particular attention to generational differences and the evolving concept of 'society of coexistence' in Japanese social consciousness.
