Tommy Krieger

Dr. Tommy Krieger is a tenure-track Senior Researcher at the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim, Germany. During winter term 2023/24, he served as Acting Professor for Economic Policy and Political Economy at the University of Konstanz. His work bridges economics, political science, and history, focusing on how political institutions shape economic outcomes.

Research interests center on:

• Political economy and institutional development
• Historical analysis of industrialization-era policies
• Machine learning applications in social sciences
• Causal inference methods using contemporary/historical data
• Democracy measurement frameworks

His publications demonstrate strong methodological innovation, particularly in developing machine learning indices for democracy assessment and analyzing diversity impacts. Recent work emphasizes 19th-century German political economy and data aggregation challenges.
