Tommaso M. Milani is the Head of the Department of Applied Linguistics and holds the Edwin Erle Sparks Professorship across multiple disciplines at Pennsylvania State University. He also holds the George C. and Jane G. Greer Professorship in Applied Linguistics, Jewish Studies, African Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. His research focuses on critical discourse analysis, intersectionality, and queer theory, with a particular interest in how language and visuality shape gender and sexual identities. He has co-edited leading journals such as Gender and Language (2014–2019) and serves on editorial boards for Feminist Theory, Journal of Homosexuality, and others.
His work critiques how well-intentioned LGBTQ+ empowerment initiatives often perpetuate classist, sexist, and racist systems. Theoretically, he integrates southern/decolonial epistemologies to analyze multilingualism, citizenship, and spatial politics. Key research sites include Sweden’s civic integration policies, Israel/Palestine’s geopolitical discourses, and South Africa’s media representations of gender and race.
Milani’s publications include influential books like Language and Masculinities (2015) and Queering Language, Gender and Sexuality (2017). His recent work explores affective politics in commemoration practices, the semiotics of borders, and queer methodologies in applied linguistics.
