Dr. Tommaso Gorla is a Lecturer in Critical and Contextual Studies (Art and Photography) at London Metropolitan University’s School of Art, Architecture and Design. He concurrently teaches Anthropology of Art at Accademia Santa Giulia in Brescia, Italy. Holding a PhD in Anthropology from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris), his interdisciplinary work bridges visual arts, anthropology, and cultural theory. He founded and edits the visual culture journal Anima Loci and co-leads the Drawing Tube collective, exploring drawing practices across disciplines.
His research focuses on image agency, perception psychology, and cultural aesthetics, often blending theoretical inquiry with artistic and editorial projects. Notable works include studies on mnemotechniques in the New World and Renaissance iconography. He has presented at institutions like the University of Porto, Warwick University, and the Courtauld Institute of Art.
Tommaso has received grants such as the Warburg Library Travel Grant (2019) and the XIV Settimana di Alti Studi Rinascimentali Scholarship (2012). His professional activities include curating exhibitions (e.g., Default 19: Investigation of Extreme Lands) and residency programs in Austria, Italy, and the UK. His editorial and curatorial work reflects a commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue in visual culture.
