Dr. Tomer Itkin serves as a Researcher in the Department of Pathology at Tel Aviv University's School of Medicine and the Sagol Center for Regenerative Medicine, directing the Neufeld Cardiovascular Research Institute at Sheba Medical Center (SMC) where his laboratory is based.
His academic journey includes PhD and initial postdoctoral training in Immunology and Stem Cells at the Weizmann Institute of Science, followed by a faculty appointment as Instructor of Biology in Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine.
Research focuses on transcription factor-regulated genetic programs governing cell fate decisions in cardiovascular and hematopoietic systems (Heart, Vessels, Blood) under homeostasis and disease. The lab employs advanced methodologies including super-resolution microscopy, flow cytometry, next-generation sequencing, transgenic animal models, clinical patient samples, and vascularized human organoids-on-a-chip to develop translational regenerative therapies.
Key recognitions include:
- Selection for the Translational Research Training in Hematology (TRTH) program
- Multiple American Society of Hematology (ASH) Achievement Awards
As the Sagol Center's inaugural Research Scholar, Dr. Itkin pioneers vascular-tissue interaction studies to advance regenerative tools while exploring connections to tumor malignancy mitigation.
