Prof. Toma Tomov, PhD, is a full-time professor at the New Bulgarian University (NBU) in the Department of Mediterranean and Eastern Studies since 2006. He has held significant administrative roles, including Dean of the Undergraduate Faculty (2006–2012) and Deputy Rector for Academic and International Activities (2010–2011). As founder of the traveling seminar “Byzantine Constantinople,” he conducts in situ research on Byzantine monuments in Istanbul, focusing on their historical, epigraphic, and topographic significance.
His research interests center on the history, epigraphy, topography, and cartography of the Byzantine capital Constantinople, with a practical emphasis on integrating ancient monuments into modern urban landscapes. He has authored multiple monographs and textbooks, including Byzantium – Known and Unknown (2012) and History of Ancient Rome (2007), which reflect his expertise in Byzantine studies and classical archaeology.
Prof. Tomov teaches courses such as BATB618 Pilgrimage Tourism and BATB846 The Cultural Heritage in the Bulgarian lands during the Ottoman Era. His work bridges academic research with practical preservation and cultural heritage education.
