Prof. Dr. Mustafa Hamdi Sayar is a Professor of Ancient History at Istanbul University's Faculty of Literature, Department of History. Since 2003, he has served as the Director of the Southeastern Europe Research Center at Istanbul University and as Editor-in-Chief of the Anadolu Araştırmaları and Güneydoğu Avrupa Araştırmaları journals since 2018.
- Education: B.A. in Classical Languages and Ancient History (1978) from Istanbul University; Ph.D. in Ancient History (1989) from University of Vienna
- Research Areas: Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Epigraphy, Regional Interactions in the Ancient World, Cultural Heritage Management, and Byzantine Studies
His scholarly work focuses on ancient Anatolian and Balkan epigraphy, cross-regional interactions in antiquity, and cultural heritage preservation. He has participated in over 150 archaeological excavations and projects in Turkey and abroad since 1978.
Scientific awards include:
- Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Scholarship for Anatolian inscriptions research
- UNESCO-ICOMOS membership for monument preservation
- Leadership roles in international academic journals: Epigraphica Anatolica, Orbis Terrarum, and Archaeologica Bulgarica
As a thesis advisor for 19 students, he has contributed significantly to academic mentorship. His career spans fieldwork in Anatolia, collaborations with European universities, and leadership in international academic organizations.
