Tom Yates is the Associate Dean (Academic) and Associate Professor in the Department of Soil Science at the University of Saskatchewan. His roles span academic leadership and soil science education. He holds affiliations with the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrology as a Professional Agrologist (PAg) and serves as Co-chair of the Soil Science Education Committee for the Canadian Society of Soil Science. His career includes prior roles as an exploration geologist, agronomist, and university administrator.
Yates holds a Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Sc. in Soil Science and Geology from the University of Saskatchewan. His research focuses on experiential learning frameworks in soil science education, pedology, land use dynamics, and Saskatchewan landscapes. He actively collaborates on professional teaching initiatives to align academic training with industry needs.
His recent publications emphasize curriculum development in soil science education, assessment strategies in field-based courses, and interdisciplinary GIS applications for food security research. Notable achievements include the Natural Sciences Education Journal’s Outstanding Reviewer Award and the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Teaching Award of Merit.
Yates contributes to academic governance through his Associate Dean role, overseeing curricular and policy decisions. He teaches RRM 301.9, a field course in Renewable Resource Management, and advocates for experiential learning integration across disciplines. His work bridges traditional soil science with modern educational methodologies, fostering practical skills for future professionals.
