Tom Stoneham is Professor of Philosophy at the University of York, with a career spanning three decades in philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and early modern philosophy. Since 2000, he has held roles including Lecturer (2000), Reader (2004), Head of Department (2006-14, 2020-present), and Dean of the Graduate Research School (2015-20). His research now focuses on practical philosophy, particularly AI Ethics and Data Privacy, while maintaining collaborations in trauma treatment philosophy.

Research interests evolved from British Idealism (Locke, Berkeley, Hume), conscious states (perception/memory/hallucination), and modal metaphysics (time/nothingness) to contemporary ethical frameworks for AI. Recent work explores anarchist political legitimacy theories and their implications for ethical theory structures.
Scientific contributions include over 56 research outputs, with 26 peer-reviewed articles since 2017. Key areas: dream/hallucination analysis, neural correlates of consciousness, and ethical frameworks for autonomous systems. His 2025 preprint on Digital Ontology and 2024 chapter on AI Harm Definitions exemplify current focus.

Teaching encompasses undergraduate courses on Early Modern Philosophy and Epistemology, plus postgraduate Metaphysics and Epistemology.
