Tom Schnell, also known as 'Mach,' is a Professor at the University of Iowa's College of Engineering, holding dual appointments in Industrial and Systems Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering. He serves as the Director of the Iowa Technology Institute and holds the Captain Jim 'Max' Gross Chair in Engineering. His roles also include Professor in Occupational and Environmental Health and Neurology, as well as Director of the Operator Performance Laboratory and Human Factors Researcher at the Public Policy Center.
Education: PhD (Industrial Engineering, Ohio University, 1998), MS (Industrial Engineering, Ohio University, 1994), BS (Electrical Engineering, Bern Institute of Technology, 1992).
Research focuses on aircraft and vehicle instrumentation, human factors, and dynamics modeling. Key areas include flight deck design, spatial disorientation prevention, wildfire monitoring systems, and biomedical applications of vibration therapy. He leads the Operator Performance Laboratory, advancing aerospace safety and neuroergonomic solutions.
Professional memberships include the Aerospace States Association, Vertical Lift Consortium, and Tailhook Association. His work bridges engineering, healthcare, and public policy, with contributions to aviation safety, emergency medical service optimization, and environmental monitoring technologies.
