Tom Sappington is a USDA-ARS Research Entomologist and Collaborating Professor at Iowa State University (ISU). He is affiliated with the ISU Department of Entomology as a courtesy faculty member and is part of the ISU Graduate Faculty. His primary role involves research on agricultural pests, focusing on their ecology, behavior, and management strategies. Sappington holds a Ph.D. in Systematics & Ecology from the University of Kansas (1989), an M.S. in Entomology from ISU (1982), and a B.S. in Biology from Central Missouri State University (1979).
His research interests span insect movement ecology, population genetics, and resistance management in agricultural contexts. Key studies include the dispersal patterns of European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) and western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera), as well as recent investigations into monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) behavior in agricultural landscapes. He employs diverse methodologies such as mark-recapture, flight mill experiments, and genomic analyses to address pest management challenges.
