Tom Sanders is a Professor of Applied Health and Social Care at Northumbria University, appointed in September 2018. He previously held roles at the University of Sheffield (Senior Research Fellow) and Keele University (Senior Research Fellow). His research focuses on healthcare interventions using mixed methods, with expertise in chronic illness management, qualitative research, and normalization process theory. He leads the BSc Health and Social Care program and is an honorary senior research fellow at the University of Sheffield's School of Health and Related Research.
Key research areas include musculoskeletal care interventions, diabetes prevention, and persistent symptom management. He co-leads the NIHR Health and Social Care Delivery Research (HSDR) funded MSS3 trial on a Symptoms Clinic model and an NIHR Programme Grant for a digital intervention in multiple sclerosis. Recent projects include personalized care post-hospital discharge and optimal models for postpartum weight management.
Sanders holds a PhD in Medical Sociology from the University of Bristol, with prior roles including Lecturer in Medical Sociology at the University of Manchester. He has served on national committees like NIHR PGfAR and Arthritis Research UK. His work emphasizes implementation science, healthcare communication, and reducing health inequalities through asset-based approaches.
