Dr. Tom Rutter is a Senior Lecturer in Shakespeare and Renaissance Drama at the School of English, University of Sheffield, where he has been affiliated since 2012. Previously, he taught at Sheffield Hallam University, University College London, and London South Bank University. His academic focus is on Renaissance literature, particularly drama, with a repertory-based approach linking theatrical production to broader societal forces.

Rutter’s research spans Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, repertory studies, and early modern science in drama. He co-directs the Sheffield Centre for Early Modern Studies and edits the journal Shakespeare. His publications include monographs on the Admiral’s Men and Shakespeare and Science, alongside co-edited essay collections.
Recent research trends include analyzing the intersection of drama and science, institutional contexts of early modern theatre, and theatrical communities in Jacobean London. His teaching modules cover Shakespeare, Marlowe, Early Modern Books, and Research Methods, with a focus on narrative, performance, and Renaissance transformations.
