Tom Ratsakatika is a Machine Learning and Remote Sensing Researcher at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with the Department of Computer Science and Technology and the Centre for Doctoral Training in Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Risk. As a PhD candidate, his research focuses on developing AI and remote sensing techniques to detect and conserve biodiverse old-growth forests. He holds Master's degrees in Aerospace Engineering, Engineering for Sustainable Development, and Environmental Data Science.
Prior to his academic role, he served as an Economic Development Adviser with the British Diplomatic Service (2013–2023), managing multidisciplinary teams and securing over £85M for global development programs. Notable projects include designing agribusiness and forest carbon investment programs in Tanzania, deploying solar mini-grids in Sierra Leone, and revitalizing road infrastructure in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
His current work involves collaborations with institutions like Fundația Conservation Carpathia and integrates deep learning models (e.g., MegaDetector, DeepFaune) for wildlife monitoring systems. He also contributed to earthquake predictability research using LSTM and TCN models as part of the AI4ER CDT program at Cambridge.
