Tom Owino is an Associate Professor at Clemson University's Department of Biosystems Engineering within the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. His research focuses on water quality, irrigation systems, and horticultural engineering. He holds a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University (1999), an M.S. from the University of Alberta (1993), and a B.S. from the University of Nairobi (1985).
Dr. Owino teaches courses such as Biosystems Engineering Honors Thesis Research, Principles and Practices of Geomatics, and Hydrologic Modeling of Small Watersheds. His research emphasizes sustainable agricultural practices, including compost utilization in potting media and precision irrigation technologies.
His recent publications explore topics like composted poultry litter benefits (2023), cotton evapotranspiration estimation (2021), and variable-rate irrigation systems (2009). Awards include the Lund Professor of the Year (2000) and recognition for outstanding undergraduate projects (1985).
Dr. Owino has advised numerous graduate students and collaborated on grants related to soil and water management. He is affiliated with Clemson's environmental engineering initiatives and has contributed to projects like the Clemson Variable-Rate Lateral Irrigation System.
