Dr. Tom Oosting is an Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on ecological genomics, population genomics, and marine biology, with expertise in baleen whale genetics and the impacts of historical environmental changes on marine species. He leads the Oosting lab - Ecological Genomics, which explores evolutionary and ecological processes through genomic approaches.
His work addresses topics like genetic diversity in marine mammals, the effects of past global warming on whale populations and their prey, and the development of genetic tools for conservation. Key collaborations include studies on microsatellite panels for individual identification in whales and investigations into hybridization events between blue and fin whales in the North Atlantic.
Recent research highlights include contributions to understanding the long-term demographic impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and the genetic basis of population structures in cetaceans. His findings have been featured in media coverage, such as a study on global warming’s lasting effects on marine populations.
