Dr Tom Nightingale is a Senior Lecturer in Cell Biology at Queen Mary University of London's William Harvey Research Institute, part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. His research focuses on endothelial cell biology, particularly mechanisms controlling leukocyte transport, vascular permeability, and thrombosis. He leads studies on endothelial trafficking of adhesion molecules and von Willebrand factor (VWF) secretion regulation.
Education: M.Biochem from University of Bath, PhD from University of Oxford. Postdoctoral research at University College London (UCL) before joining Queen Mary in 2013.
Research Interests: Investigating dynamic intracellular trafficking in endothelial cells, mechanisms of VWF secretion via actomyosin rings, and their implications for cardiovascular diseases. Key projects include tight junction protein trafficking during inflammation and novel regulators of VWF exocytosis.
Teaching & Collaboration: Academic lead for pharmacology modules and medical student tutoring. Collaborates with Prof Sussan Nourshargh and external institutions like Imperial College London. Sponsors include British Heart Foundation and Medical Research Council.
Laboratory: Directs the Microvascular Research Centre lab with group members Dr Sammy El-Mansi, Dr Tom Mitchell, and Dr Paul Imbert.
