Tom Moerenhout is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He is also a scholar at Columbia’s Center on Global Energy Policy, Senior Advisor at the World Bank, and Senior Associate at the International Institute for Sustainable Development. His expertise spans geopolitics, political economy, and international economic law, with a focus on trade/investment policies for energy transitions, sustainability in globalization, and resource-rich economies.
Education: PhD and two master’s degrees from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. Prior roles include visiting fellowships at LSE and Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, and a Fulbright fellowship at Columbia University.
Research emphasizes energy policy reforms, critical minerals, and electric mobility in developing/emerging economies. He has advised governments and institutions in India, Nigeria, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, and others, collaborating with the World Bank, OECD, OPEC, IRENA, UNEP, and NGOs like Greenpeace.
Notable awards include the Fulbright Fellowship and prestigious fellowships at Oxford and LSE. His work integrates practical policy guidance with academic rigor, addressing global challenges in energy sustainability and economic development.
