معرفی
Tom Mitcham is a Senior Research Associate at the University of Bristol's School of Geographical Sciences and a member of the Cabot Institute for the Environment. His primary research focuses on glaciology, ice sheet dynamics, and numerical modeling, particularly concerning Antarctic ice shelves. He contributes to the UK's national ice sheet modeling efforts through the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) and the UKESM's TerraFIRMA project, investigating tipping points in ice dynamics.
Education: MPhys (Hons) in Physics from the University of Manchester (2017), PhD in Glaciology from the University of Bristol (2022), supervised by Professors Jonathan Bamber and Hilmar Gudmundsson. His doctoral work examined ice shelf roles in Antarctic ice dynamics, focusing on the Larsen C Ice Shelf.
Research Interests: Dynamics of glaciers and ice sheets, numerical ice sheet models, satellite remote sensing, climate change impacts. His work bridges physics-based modeling and observational data to understand ice shelf stability and climate interactions. He has taught undergraduate and master's courses in glaciology, climate change, and scientific programming.
Collaborations and Grants: Previously a postdoctoral fellow at Northumbria University on the NSFGEO-NERC-funded project modeling rift processes in Antarctic ice shelves. Active in international collaborations, particularly regarding Antarctic ice dynamics and climate modeling. His research has been published in high-impact journals like Cryosphere and Journal of Glaciology.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the Cabot Institute and CPOM, contributing to interdisciplinary environmental change research. No specific lab mentioned beyond institutional affiliations.
