Paul Holland is an Ocean/Ice Scientist at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and an Honorary Professor at the University of Bristol. His research spans the physics of polar oceans, sea ice, and ice sheets, with a focus on understanding how oceanic melting of Antarctic ice shelves and Greenland glacier discharge drive sea-level rise and climate change impacts.
- Education: B.Sc. in Mathematics with Environmental Science (University of East Anglia, 1998), Ph.D. in Environmental Science (Loughborough University, 2001)
- Career: Postdoctoral Researcher (CPOM, 2003), Ocean Model Developer (Met Office, 2001–2003), Ice-Ocean Modeller (BAS, 2005–2010), Shelf Seas Group Leader (BAS, 2015–2022), and Individual Merit Scientist (BAS, 2020–present).
His research integrates numerical models, observational data, and laboratory experiments to study ice-ocean interactions. Key areas include Antarctic ice shelf melting, Arctic sea ice dynamics, subglacial hydrology, and coupled ice-ocean responses to climate variability. Publications highlight the role of tidal currents, basal channels, and atmospheric forcing in modulating ice sheet stability.
Notable collaborations include the GIANT PRESCIENT OCEAN:ICE ACES and MIDAS projects. He has advised over 20 Ph.D. students at institutions like the University of St Andrews, BAS, University of Leeds, and Imperial College London. Recent work emphasizes anthropogenic drivers of polar change and unavoidable future ice loss in West Antarctica.
