Dr. Tom Matthews is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Geography at King's College London, part of the School of Global Affairs. He holds a PhD in glacier-climate interactions from Loughborough University (2013). Previously, he lectured at Maynooth University (Ireland), John Moores University, and Loughborough University before joining King's in 2021.
His research focuses on extreme weather and climate events, particularly heatwaves and compound hazards, with fieldwork in high-altitude environments like the Himalayas. Notably, he co-led the installation of the world's highest-altitude weather stations on Mount Everest. His work integrates numerical modeling of glacier melt, climate projections, and interdisciplinary collaboration to address environmental and societal challenges.
Teaching includes undergraduate courses on climate change, climate variability, and geographical inquiry, as well as postgraduate modules on environmental modeling and climate change fundamentals. He supervises PhD projects on glacier extent projections in High Mountain Asia, hydroclimatic extremes, and extreme heat drivers.
Matthews collaborates with research centers like the King's Climate Research Hub and the King's Water Centre. Recent publications analyze extreme heat impacts on human health, climate adaptation strategies, and mountain weather systems. His work frequently appears in journals like Nature Reviews Earth & Environment and the International Journal of Biometeorology.
Notable contributions include warning about the risks of extreme heat during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and documenting winter weather patterns on Everest. He actively engages in public science outreach through events and media commentary on climate risks.
