Tom L. Lohr is an Instructor of Piano, Composition, and Theory at Meredith College’s Department of Music since 1979. He teaches both undergraduate and community school students, coordinating summer camps and continuing education programs. From 1986 to 2016, he directed Meredith’s Community School of Music, managing its non-credit music education programs. His teaching spans piano pedagogy, music theory seminars, and interdisciplinary courses combining visual and musical arts history.
Academically, Lohr holds a Bach. of Music in Piano Performance and a Master of Music in Piano Performance. His research focuses on composition pedagogy, with emphasis on piano repertoire development and modern orchestration techniques. He has been commissioned by organizations such as the Philharmonic Association (PA) and the NCMTA, producing works like Festive Concert Overture and the Tributes piano series.
Lohr’s compositions emphasize accessibility and educational value, with pieces frequently featured in competitions like the NCMTA Young Artist Auditions. He has presented at state conferences and served in leadership roles for professional music associations, including vice-chair of the Piano Section for NCMTA. His creative work blends historical influences with contemporary techniques, seen in projects like Meditations and an Exaltation on Medieval Melodies (2013) and the 2014 Concertino for Piano and Orchestra.
He advises students who have pursued advanced studies at institutions like Juilliard and Boston Conservatory. His professional affiliations include Gamma Mu chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda and Sigma Alpha Iota, reflecting his contributions to both academic and performance music communities.
