Tom Jaksic

Dr. Tom Jaksic is the W. Hardy Hendren Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Vice-Chairman of Pediatric General Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital, and the Surgical Director of the Center for Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation (CAIR). He is a leading expert in pediatric gastrointestinal surgery with a focus on intestinal rehabilitation and short bowel syndrome.

Dr. Jaksic completed his medical education at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario (1981), followed by an internship and residency at the University of Toronto (1982-1990). He also completed fellowships at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1986) and New England Deaconess Hospital (1987).

His research focuses on pediatric intestinal failure, necrotizing enterocolitis, short bowel syndrome, and surgical management of gastrointestinal conditions in children. He has made significant contributions to the development of the Serial Transverse Enteroplasty (STEP) procedure for short bowel syndrome. His work spans clinical outcomes research, nutritional management, and surgical innovations for children with complex gastrointestinal disorders.

Dr. Jaksic's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on intestinal rehabilitation, with particular attention to complications of intestinal failure, outcomes in extremely low birth weight infants, and innovative approaches to managing short bowel syndrome. His research consistently emphasizes multidisciplinary care approaches and long-term outcomes for pediatric patients.

He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in both Pediatric Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. His clinical specialties include branchial cleft cysts, hydroceles, inguinal hernias, minimally invasive surgery, thyroglossal duct cysts, umbilical hernias, and undescended testes.

As Surgical Director of the Center for Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation, Dr. Jaksic leads a comprehensive program that offers full surgical and non-surgical options for children with short bowel syndrome. The CAIR program has been instrumental in developing breakthrough surgical techniques like the STEP procedure, which lengthens the bowels of children with short bowel syndrome.
