Tom Isaacson is an Associate Professor of Public Relations in the College of Business at Northern Michigan University (NMU), where he has been teaching since 2012. His role includes advising the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and teaching core courses in the PR curriculum, along with specialized courses in sports PR and international PR.

Dr. Isaacson’s professional experience spans both academic and industry roles. Prior to NMU, he held full-time positions at Marquette University, graduate assistant teaching roles at Michigan State University, and summer appointments at the American University of Rome. For 12 years, he led a study abroad program in Rome, Italy, and Cannes, France, focusing on Advertising/PR with exposure to the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. Professionally, he worked in technology PR agencies in Seattle and sports PR roles across NCAA, MLB, and minor-league organizations, including the Chicago White Sox and Greensboro Bats.
His research interests center on crisis communication in sports and word-of-mouth (WOM) communication. He co-authored three book chapters on Sports PR, including a 2018 contribution to Reputational Challenges in Sport analyzing the Chicago White Sox rebuilding strategy. His work has been published in Mass Communication and Society and Journal of Advertising Research.
During summer 2014, Dr. Isaacson served as NMU’s acting AVP of Identity, Brand, and Marketing, assisting in launching a new external branding campaign. His affiliations include the College of Business and collaborations with NMU’s academic programs in Public Relations, Business Analytics, and International PR. He continues to integrate global perspectives into his teaching and research.
