Dr. Tom Hughes is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Monash University. His research focuses on advancing energy technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in liquid hydrogen storage, refrigerant optimization, and carbon capture. He leads the New Energy Technologies theme at the Woodside Monash Energy Partnership (WMEP).
Educations:
- Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (Chemical), University of Canterbury, 2003
- Doctor of Philosophy (Chemical Engineering), University of Canterbury, 2009
Research Interests: Thermophysical property measurements, natural gas processing, LNG optimization, hydrogen energy systems, and environmentally-friendly refrigerants. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing climate action and clean energy.
Funding Collaborations: Projects supported by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Chevron, Shell, and the Australian Research Council. Current initiatives include optimizing liquid hydrogen carriers and integrating liquid air energy storage with LNG production.
Teaching: Coordinates research methods courses and teaches bioenergy (RSE3243) and spatial communication in engineering (ENG1021).
