Tom Holme, Morrill Professor of Chemistry at Iowa State University, leads research groups in Chemistry Education Research (CER) and Computational Chemistry. His work focuses on improving measurement of student learning and analyzing national datasets from the ACS Exams Institute to identify educational patterns and intervention impacts.
- B.S. in Chemistry and Physics from Loras College (1983)
- Ph.D. in Chemistry from Rice University (1987)
- Postdoctoral Associate at Hebrew University and University of Pennsylvania (1987-1989)
Research interests span systems thinking, visualization tools, and instrumentation education through projects like Augmented Reality in Educational Laboratories (ARiEL). He has secured multiple National Science Foundation grants for chemistry assessment innovations and visualization tutorials.
Scientific accolades include the ACS-CES Award (2024), Pimentel Award (2017), and Norris Award (2016). As Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Chemical Education since 2020, he champions evidence-based teaching practices.
Group alumni include 12 PhD/Master's graduates and 6 postdoctoral researchers. Current advisees focus on analytical chemistry, theoretical chemistry, and human-computer interaction applications in chemical education. The Holme Research Group actively explores student-centered pedagogies and innovation adoption models in chemistry instruction.
