Dr Tom Hoctor is a Senior Lecturer in Social Sciences and Course Lead for Social Policy and Social Research at the University of Bedfordshire's School of Applied Social Sciences (part of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences). He holds a PhD from University College London (2017), an MSt from Mansfield College Oxford, and a BA from the University of Manchester.
His research focuses on conservatism, political economy, and the intersection of ideology with welfare and work. Notable projects include leading the 'What Happened to the Affluent Worker?' study on deindustrialization in Luton. Teaching responsibilities include modules on political theory, welfare comparisons, and research methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Research interests span British Conservative Party ideology, Scandinavian political economy, and the sociological impacts of deindustrialization. He has presented at major conferences including the Political Studies Association and the Nordic Challenges Conference, and reviews for journals like Journal of Consumer Culture and Politics and Governance.
His recent publications (2020-2023) critically examine neoliberalism, conservative ideological evolution, and cross-national welfare policy comparisons, blending Marxist and sociological frameworks with political economy analysis.
