Tom Hargreaves

Tom Hargreaves is an Associate Professor in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, and a member of the Science, Society and Sustainability (3S) Research Group. His work focuses on sustainability transitions, particularly exploring how social relations shape the adoption and impact of innovations like smart home technologies and community energy initiatives. He investigates energy governance, equity in energy systems, and interdisciplinary research methodologies.

His research has been funded by UKERC, EPSRC, and EU Horizon 2020, among others. Key projects include the National Observatory for Societal Engagement with Energy (SEE) and the TRANSIT project on social innovation. He teaches on modules such as 'Energy and People,' emphasizing innovative pedagogical methods like 'Theoretical Theatre' to engage students with social science theory.

Dr. Hargreaves collaborates with organizations like BEIS, Defra, and the European Commission, contributing to policy development and public engagement strategies. His awards include the UEA Excellence in Teaching Award (2015) and recognition for innovative teaching (2018).

He actively advises on energy projects such as the Ofgem Significant Investment Fund and the US Department of Energy’s home behavior studies. His work bridges academic research with real-world applications, emphasizing equity and justice in sustainability transitions.
