Professor Tom Dyson is a faculty member at Royal Holloway, University of London, serving in the Department of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy and the Conflict, Violence and Terrorism Research Centre. He holds visiting positions at institutions including the Bundeswehr Centre for Military History and Social Sciences (2021–2024). His educational background includes a DPhil in Political Science from LSE (2005), an MSc in European Politics (2000), and a BA in War Studies (1999).
Research focuses on military learning, adaptation, and defense reforms in NATO member-states such as Germany, Ukraine, and the U.S. Current projects include an ESRC-funded study on organizational learning in military operations with the Estonian, Portuguese, and Dutch armies. He was appointed to NATO's Independent Scientific Evaluation Group (2023) and has received awards including a Commander’s Award from NATO EOD (2024) and a Portuguese Army Medal (2022).
Teaching includes undergraduate courses on war/security governance and postgraduate defense studies. Collaborations span European and international institutions, with publications in journals like Defence Studies and co-authored works on European defense law and military adaptation theory.
