Tom Carruthers is an Assistant Professor of the Practice in the Department of Architecture at Cornell University’s College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP). He is also an architect, artist, and co-founder of Dream The Combine, a collaborative practice established with Jennifer Newsom in 2013 that focuses on site-specific installations at the intersection of architecture, art, and perception.
His research and creative practice explore metaphorical environments, perceptual uncertainties, and socio-political critiques of space. Dream The Combine’s work has been exhibited globally, including at the 2023 Venice Biennale Architettura, MoMA PS1, The Museum of Modern Art, MadArt Studio in Seattle, and the upcoming exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Their projects such as Hide & Seek (2018) and Lure (2019) exemplify innovative approaches to spatial experience and material engagement.
Their publications and interviews appear in leading journals like the Journal of Architectural Education, Log, Wallpaper, and Reconstructions: Architecture and Blackness in America, reflecting a deep engagement with architectural theory and discourse.
