Tom Carpino

Tom Carpino is a Postdoctoral Associate (Research Fellow) at the Duke Global Health Institute, focusing on global infectious diseases, stigma, and health equity. He holds a PhD in Infectious Disease Epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University and an MPH in Biostatistics from Columbia University.

Dr. Carpino's research examines the epidemiological drivers of mpox and other sexually transmitted infections in sexual and gender diverse communities, with emphasis on health equity and stigma reduction. He specializes in epidemiologic methods for hard-to-reach populations and has directly influenced public health responses for HIV, COVID-19, and mpox through CDC collaborations and White House policy contributions.

As a faculty teaching fellow at Johns Hopkins, he developed and taught the undergraduate course "Sex and Syndemics," mentored students, and created open-access training modules on mpox and stigma. His F31-funded dissertation research informed national vaccine policies, and he served on the editorial board for Psychology and Sexuality while leading global health projects across Africa and the Caribbean through ICAP at Columbia.
