Dr. Tom Burdyny is an Assistant Professor at Delft University of Technology's Faculty of Applied Sciences, Department of Chemical Engineering. He leads the Burdyny Energy Lab within the MECS Group, focusing on replacing fossil fuel-based processes with renewable electricity-driven technologies like CO2 electrolysis. His research emphasizes scaling electrochemical systems, transport phenomena analysis, and infrastructure impacts. He holds a BEng and MASc from the University of Victoria, a PhD from the University of Toronto (under Prof. David Sinton), and completed a postdoc at TU Delft before founding his group in 2019.
Research interests include solar fuels, energy systems, and transport phenomena. His lab explores CO2-to-chemical conversion via electrolysis, with applications in decarbonizing industrial processes. Collaborations span academic and industrial partners for real-world scalability. Recent publications address electrolyzer stability, large-scale heating effects, and salt precipitation challenges in electrochemical systems.
Notable advisees include Dr. Jasper Biemolt (now at TU Berlin) and Dr. Maryam Abdinejad (now at DTU). The group’s work is embedded in the e-Refinery Institute, advancing electrochemical technologies across atomic-to-industrial scales.
