Tom Buchanan is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Mount Royal University, where he served as Chair from 2012 to 2022. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cincinnati (2002), an MA in Sociology from the University of Mississippi (1996), and a BA in Anthropology from Indiana University (1990). His research focuses on gender inequalities in workplaces, organizations, and families, with particular attention to student adjustment in university settings, including issues of helicopter parenting and disabilities. He collaborates extensively with colleagues and students, advocating for sociological career pathways post-graduation.
His research interests include gendered perceptions of work-life balance, parenting time disparities, and the impact of ADHD accommodations on academic performance. He has published widely on topics such as gender income gaps, workaholism, and the intersection of gender and professional roles in fields like veterinary medicine.
Buchanan’s work often addresses vulnerable populations, including marginalized families and students with disabilities. He has contributed to interdisciplinary studies on racialized mothers during the pandemic and cross-cultural parenting dynamics in India. His scholarship emphasizes applied research with community and institutional partnerships, reflecting his commitment to socially engaged inquiry.
