Tom Baird is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Toronto (2008), an M.Sc. from Toronto, and a B.Sc.Hons from Queen's University, with postdoctoral experience at the Fields Institute and University of Oxford.
His research specializes in symplectic geometry and equivariant topology, with current projects on:
- Non-abelian Kirwan surjectivity for real loci
- Higher cohomology of GKM-sheaves
- Moduli spaces in gauge theory
Publications focus on moduli spaces of flat bundles, commuting tuples in Lie groups, and generalized complex geometry. Recent work examines representation varieties of non-orientable surface groups and deformation K-theory.
He advises graduate students on projects related to equivariant cohomology and moduli spaces. He mentors undergraduate researchers through NSERC USRA projects and directs the Putnam competition preparation at Memorial.
Research funded by NSERC Discovery and MUN start-up grants.
