Tolga Can is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Colorado School of Mines. Previously, he held a tenured position at the Computer Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University (METU) in Turkey. He has been recognized with two 'Instructor of the Year' awards at METU.
Education:
- BSc in Computer Engineering from Middle East Technical University (1998)
- MSc and PhD in Computer Science from University of California, Santa Barbara (2003-2004)
Research focuses on bioinformatics, graph theory, and algorithms, particularly in protein structure analysis and large-scale biological networks. Recent work addresses mRNA isoform switches in cancer, alternative polyadenylation patterns, and signaling network reconstruction.
Professional service includes serving as Academic Committee Chair for Turkey's Informatics Olympiads (2019-2022), responsible for training national teams for the International Olympiad in Informatics.
Publications emphasize cancer genomics and computational biology, with tools like MotifGenie for ChIP-Seq analysis and JOA for genomic interval comparison. Current projects explore therapeutic targets in triple-negative breast cancer through genetic axis targeting.
