Todor Pelev is a Lecturer in Music and Violin at Pomona College, where he has been a faculty member since 1995. He also teaches at Claremont Graduate University and the Idyllwild Arts Academy, contributing significantly to music education in Southern California. A native of Bulgaria, he studied at the Sofia Conservatory under Boyan Lechev and later with Dorothy DeLay at Juilliard and Donald Weilerstein at Eastman, where he served as Weilerstein's assistant.
His research and performance interests center on violin performance, chamber music, and music pedagogy. With a strong emphasis on both classical and contemporary repertoire, Mr. Pelev has performed extensively across the United States and internationally. He has appeared as a soloist with major orchestras such as the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, Buffalo and Rochester Symphonies, and the Baltimore Symphony at Carnegie Hall. He has also performed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and celebrated the 70th anniversary of John Cage’s work.
Mr. Pelev has received numerous accolades including the Silver Medal at the Wieniawski International Violin Competition and first prize in Bulgaria's National Violin Competition. Additional honors include winning the Eastman Concerto Competition, National Symphony Orchestra Competition, and the Baltimore Music Club Competition’s Professional Division.
He has mentored many accomplished students who have become concertmasters of major orchestras and professors at conservatories. His performance career includes serving as concertmaster for the San Bernardino Symphony and Redlands Bowl Festival Orchestra, among others. He performs on a 1731 Carlo Bergonzi violin known as the 'Ex-Constable.'
