
Todd Weir

Todd Weir is a Professor of History of Christianity and Modern Culture at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society. He holds the departmental position in Christianity and the History of Ideas. His academic journey includes previous roles such as Senior Lecturer (2015–2016) and Lecturer (2007–2015) at Queen’s University Belfast, and Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Washington.
Education: PhD (2005, Columbia University), MPhil (2000, Columbia University), Magister (1998, Humboldt Universität Berlin), BA (1988, Brown University).
Research focuses on secularism and religion in modern Europe, including the cultural and intellectual history of Germany, transnational religious heritage, and worldview studies. Key publications include Secularism and Religion in Nineteenth-Century Germany (2014, Jacques Barzun Prize winner) and Red Secularism (2023).
Leadership roles include former Director of the Centre for Religion and Heritage, Department Chair (2017–2022), and current Faculty Ambassador for Open Science. He chairs the Undergraduate Education Committee in Theology and Religious Studies.
Awards include the NWO Open Competition M Grant (2023), Erasmus Plus Grant (2023, 2020), and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (2023). He has supervised numerous PhD students and contributed to international collaborations on religious heritage and secularism.
