Todd Sutherland is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Science. He specializes in supramolecular chemistry, focusing on energy conversion systems and biomimetic interfaces. His research integrates organic and physical chemistry to develop photovoltaic devices inspired by biological processes like photosynthesis.
Education: B.S. in Biochemistry from Simon Fraser University (1997), Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Victoria (2002).
Research interests include supramolecular assemblies at interfaces, porphyrin/quinone derivatives, lipid bilayer membranes, and charge-transfer properties. Techniques employed include surface UV-vis spectroscopy, surface plasmon resonance, and electrochemical impedance analysis. He participates in the Energy Innovations for Today and Tomorrow initiative (2013-2021).
Recipient of teaching awards: 2016 Department of Chemistry Teaching Award, 2015 GREAT Supervisor Award, and 2009 Faculty of Science Teaching Award. His lab actively recruits graduate and undergraduate students for organic chemistry research.
