Dr. Steen's research uniquely bridges economic theory and Christian theology, examining how faith influences economic behavior in areas like labor markets, savings habits, and workplace ethics. His work investigates the theological implications of economic concepts while promoting practical applications in financial literacy and retirement planning. He emphasizes vocational calling and the integration of Christian principles into business education, often collaborating with students on empirical research projects that analyze religious participation's impact on economic decision-making.
His publication record reveals consistent focus on the religion-economics interface, with recurring themes in savings behavior across religious groups, time allocation related to faith practices, and critiques of materialism in economic theory. Recent work increasingly addresses institutional responsibilities in financial education and retirement planning within higher education settings.
Dr. Steen has received significant recognition including the Christian Business Faculty Association's Best Academic Paper Award (2018) and Best Practice Award (2012), the Granger Professor endowed chair (2009), Associated Church Press Award of Merit (1996), and Hope College's HOPE teaching award (1993).
