Todd Schwartz

Todd Schwartz is a Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Biostatistics at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, with joint faculty appointments in the School of Nursing and adjunct roles in the Eshelman School of Pharmacy and Department of Exercise & Sport Science. He also serves as Co-Director of the Methodology Core at the Thurston Arthritis Research Center. His expertise spans biostatistical consultation for clinical trials, statistical education innovation, and interdisciplinary collaborations in public health.

Dr. Schwartz holds a DrPH in Biostatistics from UNC Chapel Hill (2004), an MS in Biostatistics (1998), and a BA in Mathematics with a statistics minor from Messiah College (1995). His research focuses on categorical data analysis, clinical trial methodology, and statistical pedagogy, particularly in flipped classroom models.

His awards include the Bernard G. Greenberg Alumni Endowment Award (2020) and multiple Excellence in Doctoral Mentorship recognitions. He serves as a Statistical Editor for JAMA Surgery and Deputy Editor for Arthritis Care & Research, reflecting his leadership in methodological rigor across disciplines.

Dr. Schwartz’s teaching includes advanced statistical courses such as BIOS 665 (Categorical Data Analysis) and NURS 918 (Regression Analysis). His recent work explores how biomechanical thresholds predict post-ACL-reconstruction outcomes and the role of body composition in surgical recovery. He actively contributes to improving statistical education through initiatives like the Public Health Data Science Concentration in the MPH program.
